CV & experience

I currently work for CDS Group as a Lead UX Designer having transferred from wilko after the administration. I look after wilko.com, Homebase and Bathstore, and share some crossover with product teams at The Range on group propositions.

Restoring consumer trust and confidence in three failed brick and mortar businesses has been a tough gig, but being part of their revival and digital growth has been a worthy endeavour. It’s scrappy, it’s lean and, at times, feels like scaling a crumbling cliff face, but I’ve become more resourceful as a result.

Lead UX designer at wilko.com (CDS Group)

Jul 2022 → Now

Pre-administration (2022-2023)

I worked in the mobile experience squad, which I helped to setup and establish with an initial product roadmap and vision. Our mission was to step-change the transactional mobile experience for customers to increase conversion on wilko.com.

Using behavioural insights and experimentation, we (PM/UX) would identify the best opportunities to improve experience and test different executions to drive performance metrics.

Post-administration (2023-now)

As part of CDS Group, I crossover between wilko, Homebase, Bathstore and The Range in a project delivery setup.

I’ve helped relaunch wilko.com and homebase.co.uk following their respective administrations. Since transferring to CDS, I’ve been central in relaunching home delivery and Click & Collect, and getting several other strategic initiatives off the ground such in-store order points, pre-order products, kitchens, bathrooms, insurance, tool hire, warranty, sponsored ads and collection points. All of which, have been done with a considerably smaller team and fewer resources.

Around 20% of my time is still invested in UX enhancement across all platforms – using experimentation to demonstrate effectiveness, establishing UX standards org-wide, powering up our design approach with AI, and getting a qualitative research capability setup in the team.

To sum up, Steve is the full package when it comes to UX, be this from obtaining a deep understanding of the customer need in the discovery phase, through testing of prototypes to seek customer opinion, on to final implementation working in collaboration with the development team to ensure the UX vision is realised.

I would highly recommend Steve and I look forward to any opportunities I have to work with him in the future, he’s an all round great guy and someone I would have on my team in a heartbeat.

Senior product designer at Mindwave

Mindwave created Personal Health Records & Patient Engagement Platforms for NHS trusts and healthcare charities using their own PaaS infrastructure. The user research setup was very mature, but their UI, accessibility and visual design standards were lacking. I was bought in to help level-up in this area and take on my own set of clients. I took on the role of designer, product owner and business analyst working across 6 client accounts at different stages of their platform development.

Why did you leave?

For the first time in my career, I experienced a role that just didn’t feel right, from the steep learning curve of clinical care to the organisation setup and nature of the work. Shortly after leaving, other members of the leadership and design team promptly followed and the UK arm of the business was sold to a competitor months later.

Lead designer at The Woodland Trust

Oct 2018 → Mar 2022

I led all on all brand application, UI and interaction design across the digital estate. I worked in an agile web team; created and governed the design system and standards; supported UX research and content with solutions to design challenges; helped to sharpen the skills of fellow designers; and I championed design thinking across the organisation. All in the name of fighting climate change and the biodiversity crisis.

What did a typical month look like?

  • Designing flexible CMS components for content editors to use in Umbraco
  • Setting usability design standards and guidelines for the design system
  • Defining requirements and use cases with the business analyst
  • Mapping digital journeys and touchpoints using an emotive framework for appeals and campaigns
  • Analysing insights and research findings from the insight team
  • Monitoring user behaviour in Hotjar and looking out for user pain points
  • Testing copy and messaging with remote participants in Wynter
  • Governing and advising internal stakeholders and third parties on how to apply patterns using the design system
  • Leading on comms projects requiring accessibility consideration
  • Digital creative and art direction for the biggest annual campaigns
  • Rolling out UI and interaction standards to the wider digital estate and third party sites

Why did you leave?

After being hit by a major cyber incident, the digital roadmap was deferred and all focus was placed on recovering and rebuilding internal systems for a minimum of 3 years. I was repositioned within the organisation to work on digital creative for social and PPC for the foreseeable future, which wasn’t where I wanted to be.

Senior UX designer at Hallam

Apr 2017 → Oct 2018

Under the wing of the creative director, I was thrust into a world of design thinking, working agile with developers, optimising conversion and facilitating UX workshops at one of the most decorated digital agencies in the region. As their first senior design hire, I was a big part of establishing the methodology and onboarding new designers.

What did a typical month look like?

  • Facilitating co-design & requirement gathering workshops with clients
  • Prototyping from low fidelity sketches and wire-flows through to high fidelity, production ready
  • Creating product style guides and themes for web/app development
  • Producing and analysing CRO tests to improve performance of client sites
  • Coaching junior designers, implementing new tools and processes
  • Running card sorting and tree testing activities in Optimal Sort, analysing behavioural insights from Hotjar
  • Preparing research studies along side external testing labs

Why did you leave?

I had been agency-side for most of my career and the projects I loved and excelled at the most were when I was embedded into big organisations to help with their digital transformation. But these types of relationships were few and far between in agency life. When the opportunity arose to join an in-house team at the start of their transformation journey, I followed that passion.

Senior designer at Bubble

Jan 2015 → Mar 2017

Bubble are an integrated design and marketing agency. I was very much an all-rounder, from branding and web to exhibitions and packaging. I had my first real taste of UI and experience design for large and complex websites, which is where my fascination for component-led design stemmed from. It was Bubble where I first started to coach and mentor junior designers.

What did a typical month look like?

  • Branding for new retail products and designing packaging and POS display
  • UI and interaction design for WordPress, Drupal, Magento and progressive web apps
  • Writing marketing content and propositions for startup websites
  • Managing client relationships and several key accounts
  • Introducing new tools and ways of working to enhance the digital output
  • Creating pitch decks and concepts to help win work
  • Mentoring junior members of the team to help them develop

Why did you leave?

Relocation was the primary reason, but I was keen to transition from purely visual design into a more specialised UX role. The opportunity at Hallam offered several key mentors in usability and experience design that would ultimately set my career path on a new course.

Early design career

2005 → 2015

Highlights

  • 2005: Produced a national ad campaign creative for Marston’s PLC aged 15, which had over 1 million posters, menus, beers mats and table talkers printed
  • 2007: Held 2 part-time graphic design jobs while studying graphic design at college
  • 2008: Landed my first permanent design job at a Design Week Top 50 Agency, and promoted to pre-press manager 12 months later
  • 2009: Took a year out to travel around Australia, freelanced to help fund it
  • 2010: Became a shareholder and director of a design agency and 2 startups
  • 2013: Worked freelance in hospitality customer experience and marketing – my first taste of UX
  • 2014: Won £250k investment for a game designer I represented at The Children’s Media Conference, pitching to 4 industry leaders on stage

2005-2010

I started young. Aged 15, I sat in print design studios over the holidays absorbing everything like a sponge. I landed two part-time design roles while studying design at college, which tee’d up my career.

My first full-time position was at a Design Week Top 50 Agency, RJ Design Associates. I joined as a junior designer and was promoted to pre-press manager 12 months later.

The first few years were about learning fast, taking initiative and being utterly fearless in trying new things and pushing out of my comfort zone. I screwed up more times than I care to admit but it ultimately led to faster growth and more experience. I got to hone my craft under the guidance of seasoned pros, who taught me how master the basic design fundamentals right through to selling ideas to business owners and board members.

2010-2013

After spending a year circumnavigating Australia, I joined forces with a former colleague and a financial investor to kick-start a design agency. We grew pretty fast and soon had several other businesses together. I soon learnt how challenging it was to juggle multiple startups. As exhilarating as this journey was, growing at that pace and spinning too many plates became unsustainable.

I left all my business endeavours behind and relocated to the North West in pursuit of balance – it was a rough road ahead. I struggled to land employment and scraped by for several months. I was 23 at this point, and learning some invaluable lessons in humility and commercial value – those lessons shaped my career for years to come and ultimately made me a stronger designer with more to offer.

2013-2015

I opted to freelance and pursued an opportunity where I had a deep interest and some background experience in the industry. I started focusing on branding and customer experience in the hospitality industry. Getting more bums on seats, increasing customer spend and keeping them coming back, which ignited a passion for customer experience.

Working closely with the clients, we achieved some transformational results. One restaurant owner raised enough capital from their increased success to open a new venue within 3 years of opening their first. A non-profit catering client received funding and grants for 4 new locations after the success of their first project of which I played a significant role in launching and marketing.

Professionally, things were going really well. But personally, my time in the North West hadn’t gone to plan, so I moved back to my home county to start fresh. I joined Bubble, who were expanding their digital capability at the time.
